Older Homes Often Hide More Than One Roof
It was once common to lay new shingles directly over old ones. On many older Columbus homes we find two layers, sometimes more. Extra layers add weight, trap heat and hide damage. We strip the roof down to the deck so the new system starts on a sound, flat surface. That is also the only way to see what has been happening underneath.
Protecting Landscaping, Siding and Driveways
- Tarps over flower beds, shrubs and patios before tear-off begins.
- Plywood or boards leaned against vulnerable siding and windows.
- A dumpster or trailer placed to protect lawns and avoid soft ground.
- Covers for outdoor AC units and pool equipment where needed.
Before we start, we walk the property with you and note anything fragile.
Inspecting the Deck Once It Is Bare
With the old roofing off, we check every section of roof decking for rot, delamination and soft spots, especially near eaves, valleys and around chimneys. Damaged boards are photographed and replaced before underlayment goes down. Our article on how long a roof lasts in Mississippi explains why decking condition affects the life of the new roof.
Cleanup You Can Check Yourself
At the end of each day, loose debris goes into the dumpster and walkways are cleared. When the job is finished we run magnetic nail sweepers across the lawn, driveway and beds to collect stray nails, then walk the property with you. If you find anything we missed, call us. Common Questions
Can new shingles go over my existing roof?
It is sometimes allowed, but we rarely recommend it. A layover hides deck damage, adds weight and can shorten the new roof's life. Tearing off gives a sound starting point.
How do you protect my flower beds and AC unit?
We cover beds, shrubs and equipment with tarps or boards before tear-off begins. We also walk the property with you first to mark anything delicate.
What happens if you find soft spots in the decking?
We photograph the damaged area, show you, and replace it at the per-sheet price listed in your estimate. That way there are no surprise charges.
Do you work on commercial roofs in Columbus?
Yes. We install and repair roofs on many commercial buildings, including low-slope systems. An inspection helps us recommend the right approach.
