Two Kinds of Light, Two Different Jobs
Task lighting is bright, focused light where you cut, sear and check doneness: over the grill, along the prep counter and at the sink. Ambient lighting sets the mood and lets people move around safely: under-cap strips on the bar, soft downlights in a roof and low lights along steps. Using both keeps the cook's area bright without glaring into guests' eyes.
Why We Use LED Fixtures
LEDs use far less electricity than incandescent or halogen bulbs, last much longer and give off very little heat, which matters when lights sit near people and food. They are available in warm color temperatures that flatter food and faces. We choose fixtures rated for damp or wet locations depending on whether they sit under a roof or out in the open.
Wiring, Safety and Controls
- Line-voltage circuits are GFCI-protected and run in proper conduit.
- Low-voltage systems with a transformer are used where they make sense, such as step and accent lights.
- Dimmers, timers and smart controls let you switch from cooking to dining mode.
For lighting beyond the kitchen, see our outdoor lighting installation and patio and pergola lighting pages.
Adding Light to an Existing Kitchen
Retrofits are common. We can often fish wire through island access panels, mount fixtures to an existing roof or pergola, and add under-counter strips without tearing out stone. If your kitchen still needs a cover, our outdoor kitchen team can plan both together.
Common Questions
What is the difference between task and ambient lighting?
Task lighting is focused and bright for cooking and prep. Ambient lighting is softer and fills the space so people can relax and move safely. Most outdoor kitchens need both.
Why choose LED for an outdoor kitchen?
LEDs are efficient, long-lasting and run cool. They also come in warm tones and dimmable versions, which suit evening entertaining.
Can lighting be added to the kitchen I already have?
Yes, in most cases. We look at how power can reach the island or roof and plan routes that avoid damaging finished stone or masonry.
Can I control the lights from my phone?
Many fixtures and transformers work with smart switches or apps, so you can dim, schedule or set scenes remotely. We help you pick a system that fits what you already use at home.
What color temperature works best over a grill?
Warm white in roughly the 2700K to 3000K range flatters food and faces and feels relaxed for dining. Over the cooking surface itself, slightly brighter, neutral light helps you judge doneness. Dimmers let one fixture serve both purposes.
