Bow vs. Bay at a Glance
A bay uses three panels with sharp angles; a bow uses more panels at shallow angles to create a curve. Bow windows usually project less from the wall than a bay of the same width but span a wider opening, which makes them ideal for long living room or dining room walls. Compare them in detail on our Pella bay windows page.
Panel and Operating Options
Each panel in a bow can be fixed or operable. A common layout uses fixed center panels for unobstructed views and casement windows at the ends for ventilation. Interior wood finishes, grille patterns and exterior colors are chosen to match the rest of the home. Insulated, low-E glass helps manage heat gain on sunny walls.
Will a Bow Window Work on My Wall?
Bows need a fairly wide opening and enough exterior clearance for the projection. We check what is inside the wall (wiring, plumbing, ductwork), whether the header needs upgrading for a wider opening and whether there is room under the eave for the head of the window. Walls under a deep porch or tight to a walkway may need a different solution.
Our Installation Approach
- Measure the opening and plan the projection and support method
- Remove the old window and reframe if needed
- Set the bow on support cables or brackets, level and plumb
- Install the roof cap or flashing above and insulate the seat and head boards
- Seal, trim and finish inside and out
A cushioned bow window seat is easy to add because the seat board already forms a deep sill. For other style options, see our window replacement services in Oxford.
Common Questions
How much do Pella bow windows cost to install?
Cost depends on the number and size of panels, glass options, finishes and any reframing or roofing needed. We provide a free, itemized estimate after an in-home visit.
How long does bow window installation take?
Many installations are completed in a day or two after the unit arrives. Wider openings that need a new header can take longer.
Can I add a window seat?
Yes. The seat board can be finished as a cushioned bench, and we insulate below it so it stays comfortable year-round.
What warranty comes with a bow window?
Pella provides manufacturer coverage, and we explain both the manufacturer and our workmanship warranties in writing before installation.
