Valleys Carry the Most Water
Where two roof planes meet, all the water from both sides funnels into one channel. Valleys need leak barrier underneath, the correct valley style for the shingle and clear paths free of debris. Leaves and pine needles that collect here hold water against the roof and push it sideways under shingles.
Edges, Drip Edge and Fascia
Without drip edge, water can wick back under the first course of shingles and into the deck and fascia. We install drip edge on every replacement and check the fascia behind it. Rotted fascia is replaced before new metal goes on. Our page on soffit and fascia repair explains that work.
Gutters as Part of the Roof
Undersized, sagging or clogged gutters overflow at the worst moment and spill water against fascia, siding and foundations. We check pitch, hanger spacing and downspout capacity, and can replace gutters at the same time as the roof so the edge details fit together. See our gutter installation and repair service.
Walls, Chimneys and Kick-Outs
Where a roof runs into a wall, step flashing and a kick-out flashing at the bottom direct water into the gutter instead of behind the siding. Missing kick-outs are one of the most common causes of hidden wall rot we see. Chimneys need the same care: step flashing along the sides, counterflashing set into the mortar and, on wider chimneys, a cricket on the uphill side so water and debris do not pile up behind it.

Common Questions
Why is the wood at the edge of my roof rotting?
Common causes are missing drip edge, overflowing gutters or water running behind the gutter. We find the cause and fix it along with the damaged wood.
Should gutters be replaced along with the roof?
If they sag, leak at the seams or are undersized, replacing them during the reroof lets the new drip edge and gutters fit together properly. Sound gutters can usually stay.
What is a chimney cricket?
It is a small peaked structure built on the uphill side of a wide chimney. It splits water and debris around the chimney instead of letting them pool behind it.
