How Hail Damages a Roof
Hailstones knock granules off shingles and can bruise or crack the mat underneath. Those spots may look minor, but they expose asphalt to sunlight and age faster, which can lead to leaks months later. On metal roofs, hail can leave dents that may or may not affect performance depending on size and finish. Gutters, vents and flashing are softer than shingles, so they often show the clearest evidence of a storm's size and direction.
Clues You Can Check From the Ground
- Dents on gutters, downspouts, mailboxes or roof vents
- Piles of granules at downspout outlets
- Dings on outdoor AC units or patio furniture
- Damaged window screens or siding on the side facing the storm
If you see these, the roof likely took hits too. Stay off the roof and schedule an inspection. Our guide on checking your roof for storm damage has more tips.
What Our Hail Inspection Documents
We inspect each roof slope, mark and photograph hail hits, note soft metals that were dented and record the storm date you provide. You receive photos and a summary you can share with your insurer. We explain what we found, and your insurance company decides coverage. Learn how claims work on our storm damage and insurance claims page.
Repair or Replace After Hail
Scattered hits on a younger roof may be repairable. Widespread bruising, or hail on an older roof, usually points to replacement. If you replace, consider impact-resistant shingles to reduce damage in future storms. See our Meridian roof installation page for new roof options.
Common Questions
Do you provide residential roofing in Meridian, MS?
Yes. We inspect, repair and replace home roofs in Meridian and surrounding east Mississippi communities.
How soon after a hailstorm should I get an inspection?
As soon as practical. Many policies have time limits for reporting damage, and early documentation is more useful. We schedule inspections as our calendar allows after a storm.
What will your hail report include?
You will receive photos of hail hits on each slope, notes on dented vents and gutters and a summary of our findings that you can share with your adjuster.
Does hail damage always mean a new roof?
No. Light, scattered damage on a younger roof can often be repaired. We look at how many hits there are per slope and how old the roof is before recommending anything.
