What Hail Damage Actually Looks Like
- Dark, soft spots where granules have been knocked off the shingle
- Cracks or fractures in the shingle mat that may not show for weeks
- Dents in metal vents, flashing, gutters and downspouts
- Spatter marks on painted surfaces and siding
If you see these signs, schedule a hail damage inspection before filing. Dented gutters and spatter on the driveway side of the house are good clues that the roof deserves a closer look. Our article on hail damage versus normal wear shows the differences.
A Typical Claim Timeline
- Inspection. We inspect and document damage with photos and measurements.
- Notice. You report the claim to your insurer; policies usually have deadlines.
- Adjuster visit. The adjuster inspects, and we can attend to point out what we documented.
- Decision. The insurer issues its scope and payment based on your policy.
- Work. We complete the approved repair or replacement and provide completion photos.

When a Repair Is Enough
Not every hailstorm totals a roof. Small hail or a glancing storm may only damage a few shingles on one slope, along with a dented vent or two. In that case we replace the affected pieces with matching materials where available and reseal the surrounding area. If your insurer approves only a partial repair and matching shingles cannot be found, we will explain your options.
Doing the Replacement Right
Hail claims often lead to full replacement. We tear off to the deck, replace damaged sheathing, install leak barrier and underlayment, replace dented vents and flashing and install new shingles, often in one to three days. Many Horn Lake homeowners choose impact-rated shingles at this point. See our Horn Lake residential roofing page for options.
Common Questions
Can hail damage cause leaks later?
Yes. Bruised shingles lose granules and can crack over time, so a roof that does not leak right after a storm may start leaking months later.
Does hail always mean I need a new roof?
No. Scattered damage on one slope may be repairable, while widespread bruising usually calls for replacement. We explain our reasoning with photos.
How long do I have to file a hail claim?
Deadlines vary by policy and insurer, so check yours promptly. Reporting soon after the storm is always the safer course.
