Stepped or Racked: Fencing on a Slope

• Stepped fences keep each panel level and drop down in steps at each post. They suit rigid panels like vinyl, but leave triangular gaps at the bottom that may need filling for pets.
• Racked fences angle the rails to follow the slope so the bottom stays close to the ground. They work well with wood and many aluminum systems.

On steep or uneven ground, we sometimes combine both approaches along one fence line.

Materials We Offer

We install wood privacy and picket fences, vinyl, aluminum, composite and chain link. For hilly sites, wood and rackable aluminum are the most flexible. We also build custom gates and can design heights and styles to meet local zoning rules. On slopes, gates need special care: we position them on the flattest practical spot or set them so they swing clear of rising ground, which avoids gates that drag or leave big gaps beneath.

Repairing Older Fences

Many older homes have fences that are worth saving. We reset leaning posts, replace rotted rails and boards, rehang sagging gates and fix washouts under the fence line. When a fence has widespread rot, we will recommend replacement and explain why. Partial replacement, such as rebuilding only the most exposed downhill section, is often a sensible middle ground.

Seasonal Fence Care

• Spring: check for storm damage and loose boards
• Summer: trim vines and shrubs back from the fence
• Fall: clear leaves from the base so moisture does not sit against wood
• Every few years: wash and reseal wood fences
