Built-In or Portable?
A portable spa is a self-contained shell with its own cabinet. It costs less and can be moved later. A built-in spa sits partly or fully recessed in a deck or patio, often surrounded by stone or decking, for a seamless look. Many Oxford homeowners split the difference by setting a portable spa into a custom-built deck or stone surround so it looks built-in but can still be serviced easily.
A Base That Can Carry the Weight
Filled with water and people, a hot tub weighs several thousand pounds. On the ground, it needs a level, reinforced concrete pad. On a deck, the framing below usually has to be reinforced with additional joists, beams and footings. Clay soil that shifts with the seasons makes a proper base even more important. We design for the manufacturer’s specified load and leave access to the equipment panel.
Electrical and Safety
Most hot tubs need a dedicated circuit with a ground-fault disconnect within sight of the tub. That work should be done by a licensed electrician to code. We also plan non-slip surfaces, sturdy steps with handrails where needed and a lockable cover.
Surrounds, Privacy and Shade
The surround is what turns a tub into a retreat. Options include stone or composite steps and benches, built-in storage for towels and chemicals, and an integrated cover lifter. Privacy screens, outdoor curtains or a freestanding shade structure keep sun and neighbors at bay. For other water features, see our water and relaxation features page.
Common Questions
Can my existing deck hold a hot tub?
Many decks are not built for that load. We inspect the framing and footings and either reinforce them or recommend a separate concrete pad.
Do I need special electrical work?
Most hot tubs require a dedicated circuit and a GFCI disconnect installed by a licensed electrician. Plug-in models are smaller and less common.
How long does a hot tub installation take?
A pad and set-in-place installation can be quick, while a custom deck surround or recessed installation may take one to two weeks.
Can a hot tub go under a pergola or roof?
Yes, and shade helps in summer. Covered spots need good airflow so steam does not damage the ceiling, and enough headroom to open the cover. We plan clearances during design.
Are hot tubs efficient in Mississippi weather?
Mild winters help, and a well-fitting insulated cover makes the biggest difference. Shade in summer keeps the water from overheating.
