When Custom Windows Are the Right Call
Standard-size replacement windows suit many homes, but custom-built units are the better choice when:
- Openings are unusual sizes or shapes, such as arches, trapezoids or circles
- You want to match the look of original divided-lite patterns
- Large openings combine several units into one assembly
- A new bay or bow window will replace a flat window
Custom units are measured precisely and built to order, so the fit is tight and trim work is cleaner.
How Bay and Bow Windows Are Built
A bay window projects out from the wall with a center unit and angled flankers; a bow window uses four or more units in a gentle curve. Both add light and interior space but carry real weight. We support them with cable systems or knee braces, insulate the seat board and head board, and cap the top with a small roof or metal cover that is flashed into the wall. Skipping any of those steps leads to sagging, drafts or leaks. See examples on our Pella bay window page.
Specialty Doors
We also install French doors, multi-panel sliding doors and entry doors with sidelites or transoms. These often need framing adjustments, so we inspect the opening and header before ordering.
Cost, Timeline and Warranty
Pricing depends on the size and shape of each unit, frame material, glass options and the amount of interior and exterior finishing. Custom units take longer to manufacture than stock sizes, so lead times of several weeks are common. Once materials arrive, installation is usually one to a few days. Manufacturer warranties and our workmanship coverage are explained in writing. Read our Pella vs. Andersen comparison or the Mississippi window and door installation overview for more background.
Common Questions
What makes custom window installation different?
Custom units are built to the exact measurements of your openings instead of being adapted with filler strips. That means better sealing, cleaner trim and the ability to match unusual shapes.
How do I know if I need custom windows or doors?
If your openings are odd sizes, arched or oversized, or if you are adding a bay window or changing a door configuration, custom is usually required. We measure and advise during a free visit.
What does custom or bay window installation cost?
It varies with size, style, materials and finishing work. We provide an itemized quote after measuring your home.
How long does installation take?
After the custom units are manufactured, most installations take one to a few days, with bay windows on the longer end because of support and roofing details.
