Jackson Roofers for Mixed Shingle and Low-Slope Roofs

Many Jackson homes have more than one kind of roof: a pitched shingle main roof plus a flat or nearly flat section over a back porch, carport, sunroom or addition. Those low-slope areas, and the joints where they meet the main roof, cause a large share of the leaks we see. This page is about how we work as Jackson MS roofers on these mixed roofs, from choosing the right material for each slope to sealing the transitions. Tekton Exteriors serves homeowners throughout the Jackson Metro.

Why Low-Slope Sections Leak

Shingles shed water by overlapping, which only works when there is enough slope. On a nearly flat porch roof, water lingers and wind-driven rain can push under the laps. Ponding water, worn roll roofing and patched seams are common culprits.

Low-slope sections also collect leaves and debris, which hold water against the surface and speed up wear.

The Right Material for Each Slope

  • Steep slopes: architectural shingles over synthetic underlayment
  • Low slopes: single-ply membranes like TPO or EPDM, or modified bitumen
  • In-between slopes: standing seam metal, which handles lower pitches than shingles

Sealing the Transition

Where a low-slope roof meets the main roof or a wall, the membrane must run up under the shingles or siding and be flashed properly. This tie-in is where shortcuts show up as stains on the porch ceiling. We pay particular attention to it, along with drainage at the edge so water does not pond against the house.

Repairs and Full Replacements

Sometimes a low-slope section can be repaired with a patch or partial membrane replacement. If it is past saving, we replace it at the same time as, or separately from, the shingle roof. See flat roof repair for options, and roof installation in Jackson for full replacements. Most residential installs take one to three days.

Common Questions

Why choose Tekton Exteriors for a roof with flat sections?

We install both shingle and low-slope systems, so we can handle the whole roof and the transitions between them instead of leaving those details to chance.

How long will my roof project take?

Most residential projects take one to three days depending on size and how many roof types are involved.

Do you handle storm damage repairs and insurance claims?

Yes. We repair storm damage on shingle, metal and low-slope roofs and help document it for insurance.

Can I put shingles on my carport roof?

Only if it has enough slope. Most carports and flat porch roofs need a membrane or metal system to stay watertight.

Can a low-slope roof be coated instead of replaced?

Sometimes. If the membrane is still sound and the main problem is surface wear, a roof coating can extend its life. Coatings will not fix wet insulation or failed seams, so we check the condition first.
