Three-Tab, Architectural and Impact-Rated Shingles
Three-tab
Flat, uniform and lightweight. Still found on many older roofs, but less common on new installs because of lower wind ratings.
Architectural (dimensional)
Thicker, layered shingles with a shadowed look. Architectural shingles are commonly rated for higher wind speeds than 3-tab and are our usual recommendation.
Impact-resistant
Built to better withstand hail. Some insurers offer premium considerations for them, so it is worth asking your agent.
Picking a Color and Profile That Fit the House
Lighter shingle colors reflect more heat, while darker tones can hide streaking. We suggest viewing samples outdoors in morning and afternoon light, and considering brick, siding and trim colors together. For older homes near downtown Canton, a traditional profile in a muted tone usually looks right; newer builds can carry bolder blends.
What Goes Under the Shingles
- Synthetic underlayment across the deck as a secondary water barrier
- Ice-and-water membrane in valleys and around chimneys and pipes
- Starter strip along eaves and rakes to lock down the first course
- Drip edge to guide water into the gutters
- New step and counter flashing at walls
- Ridge cap shingles and ridge vent to finish the system
Skipping any of these is a common reason new roofs leak early.
Matching Shingles to Canton's Weather
Long, humid summers and strong spring storms reward a roof that sheds water fast and resists wind uplift. For a deeper comparison of products, read our guide to the best roofing materials for Mississippi weather. If your roof has already taken a hit, see our page on storm damage roofing in Canton.
Common Questions
What shingle type do you recommend most often in Canton?
A quality architectural shingle fits most homes and budgets. If hail is a concern or your insurer offers a benefit, an impact-rated shingle is worth pricing as well.
How long does a shingle installation take?
Most single-family homes are completed in one to three days, depending on roof size, pitch and how much decking needs repair. Weather can shift the schedule.
Can I see shingle samples before deciding?
Yes. We bring samples to the estimate and can leave them with you so you can see them against your home at different times of day.
Do new shingles come with a warranty?
Shingles carry a manufacturer warranty, and we provide a workmanship warranty as well. Both are explained in writing so you know what is covered.
