Glass That Handles Glare and Heat
Water reflects sunlight back toward the house, so lake-facing rooms can get twice the brightness and heat of a typical backyard view. A low-E glass package with a low solar heat gain rating cuts that heat while keeping the glass clear. For the most exposed walls, we may suggest a slightly stronger coating than you would use on the street side. We will show you samples, because the right balance between view and comfort is personal.
Frames Built for Moist Air
Humidity near the water is relentless. Vinyl and fiberglass frames do not rot and need little more than an occasional rinse. Fiberglass expands and contracts very little with temperature swings, which helps seals last on big sun-baked openings. If you love the warmth of wood inside, wood-clad units keep painted or stained wood indoors with a protective exterior skin. We do not recommend bare exterior wood on waterfront walls.
Patio Doors Sized for the View
The door to the deck is often the most important opening in a lake home. Wide sliding doors maximize glass and do not swing into furniture; hinged French doors open fully for parties on the patio. Either way we check the threshold height and the deck or patio slope so rain drains away from the sill. For outdoor spaces beyond the door, see our Reservoir decks and pergolas page.
Wind and Water Off the Lake
Storms that cross open water can drive rain sideways. Proper flashing, a sloped sill pan on doors and a continuous seal around every frame matter more here than almost anywhere else. If a recent storm has already damaged a window or door, we can document it for your insurer; our guide to storm damage and insurance claims explains how that process works.
Common Questions
Will low-E glass make my lake view look tinted?
Modern low-E coatings are very clear. Some solar-control options have a faint tint, which is why we bring samples so you can see the difference in your own light before you choose.
Do new windows help with energy costs in a lake home?
Lake-facing rooms often have the most glass and the most sun, so they usually show the clearest improvement in comfort and cooling once efficient windows go in.
What window and door types do you install around the Reservoir?
Double-hung, casement, sliding, picture and specialty windows, plus sliding and hinged patio doors and fiberglass or steel entry doors, from brands such as Pella.
How long does installation usually take?
Most homes are completed in a few days once the custom units are delivered. Large patio door openings may add time, and we schedule everything in advance.
