Start With a Master Plan
Before any concrete is poured, we sketch the whole yard as you would eventually like it: where the patio sits, where shade goes, where the grill and fire feature would be, and how people move from the back door. Even if you build only one piece this year, the plan keeps the pieces working together.
Phase One: The Foundation
Most families begin with the surface. A concrete or paver patio or a low deck creates usable space immediately. This is also when we bury conduit and gas or water sleeves under the slab for future features, which costs little now and saves cutting concrete later. Drainage is set at this stage so water moves away from the house. Learn more about our concrete and hardscaping work.
Phase Two: Shade and Shelter
Next comes cover. A pergola gives filtered shade; a pavilion or roof extension gives full protection from sun and rain. Because footings were planned in phase one, adding the structure is straightforward. Our pergola vs. pavilion guide compares the two.
Phase Three: Comfort and Cooking
- A built-in grill station or full outdoor kitchen
- Ceiling fans and lighting under the cover
- A fire pit or fireplace for cooler months
- Privacy screens or landscape walls
Each piece connects to the sleeves and circuits roughed in earlier.
Why Phasing Works Well
You spread cost over time, live with the space before committing to the next step, and avoid paying twice for demolition. It also lets you adjust: many families find they want a bigger cover once they start using the patio.
Common Questions
How long does each phase take?
A patio or small deck is often finished within a week or two. Covers and kitchens take longer, depending on size, permits and material availability.
What materials hold up best in Mississippi?
Concrete and pavers for the ground, aluminum or sealed wood for pergolas, composite for decking, and stone or stainless for kitchens. All handle heat and humidity well.
Can you build a fully custom space in one go?
Yes. Phasing is an option, not a requirement. Many Saltillo homeowners build everything in a single project.
Will you keep my plans on file for later phases?
Yes. We keep your design and material selections so the next phase matches the first.
