1. Structural Decking and Heavy-Duty Underlayment

The foundation of your roof is the wood decking (usually plywood or OSB sheets). On top of this wood, we install a high-performance underlayment. While old-school felt paper used to be the industry standard, modern systems utilize synthetic polymer underlayments. This advanced material is incredibly tear-resistant and creates a secondary water-resistant barrier that protects your home even if high winds rip a shingle free.

2. Ice and Water Barriers in High-Risk Zones

In central Mississippi, we don’t deal with heavy ice dams, but we do face massive downpours and wind-driven rain. We apply specialized self-adhering modified bitumen membranes directly to the most vulnerable areas of your roof structure:

• Valleys: The intersection where two roof slopes meet and handle the highest volume of rushing water.

• Eaves and Rakes: The edges of your roof where wind-driven rain is most likely to force its way under the shingles.

• Penetrations: Around chimneys, plumbing vents, and attic exhaust pipes.

3. Advanced Ventilation and Thermal Dynamics

A roof must do more than just shed rainwater; it has to breathe. During a typical Pickens summer, attic temperatures can easily surpass 150°F if the space isn’t ventilated properly. This trapped heat radiates downward into your living spaces, causing your air conditioner to run constantly and driving up your monthly energy expenses.

Furthermore, extreme attic heat bakes your shingles from the underside, causing them to blister, crack, and wear out long before they should. A properly balanced ventilation system utilizes intake vents at the soffits (under the roof overhang) and continuous exhaust ridge vents at the highest peak. This layout relies on natural thermal convection—hot air rises and escapes out the top, drawing cooler air in through the bottom—to keep your attic temperature regulated.
